Dubai has a well organised and efficient bus service managed by the RTA ( Road Transport Authority) which provides a cheap means of transport around the city on its fleet of over 1200 buses operating on more than 60 routes. The high-tech buses are air conditioned and have a few seats reserved for ladies at the front. Routes are displayed at the front and back of the bus both in Arabic as well as in English through an electronically operated destination display system. Most buses can accomodate 51 seating and 10 standing passengers. In a bid to ease traffic congestion, new routes are being added on a regular basis. The frequency of buses has aslo increased in recent times. 15 double-decker buses are also part of the fleet.
In addition, Dubai is a pioneer in providing air conditioned bus shelters for the comfort and convenience of its commuters. These crescent shaped shelters with a contemporary metallic finish can seat up to 8 passengers and a equal number can stand within as well. There are more than 500 bus shelters in the city already. In addition, bus time tables and fares are available at the bus stop.
Fares depend on the destination and are paid to the driver upon boarding. The minimum fare is 2 Dhs. It is advisable to carry exact change for the fare. Pre-paid smart cards are also available and they work out cheaper if you intend using the bus for a long period. Main bus terminus is at Deira near the Gold Souk and at Ghubaiba in Bur Dubai.
