As with any city, the breadth of Cairo can not be captured in one day. Yet, there are a few main points which every tourist must see in order to say, “I was in Cairo". These places include the Pyramids and Sphinx, the Egyptian Museum, and the Khan al-Khalili market. Keep in mind that the Pyramids will take most of your time, and depending of how much you want to see in the Egyptian Museum, this will also be time consuming. Therefore, it is recommended that you cross these two places off your “must-see list early on". First begin with the Egyptian Museum, which may take you anywhere from two to three hours. Once there, it is recommended to cruise around the building and get a feel of it before you stop into one of the exhibitions and take a longer look (King Tut's gallery is highly recommended and the most well-known). Soon after, head over to Giza and catch the majestic sights of the Pyramids and the Sphinx (approximately four hours). Then, head back to the center and see if you can catch a short boat ride on the river Nile. You can book a short river Nile cruise with Memphis Tours (02 571 6050). Soon after, you can take a trip to the Khan al-Khalili to catch some local people flavor. This is also a good place to buy some souvenirs and give Egyptian bargaining a try (hint: do not settle on the first offer).
Enjoy!
